Listening to Judge Elizabeth Steyn describing how he bludgeoned his wife of 31 years to death, Rob Packham’s expressionless face cracked for just a moment as he cast his gaze towards the Cape Town High Court ceiling.

The 58-year-old continued to shake his head, scoffing and muttering as Steyn sentenced him to an effective 22 years behind bars on Wednesday.
