When Free State truck driver Simon Mokoena now gets into his 18-wheeler to embark on a long-haul journey, he has no idea whether he will return home safely to his wife and children.

These days it’s not the risk of hijacking, unsafe roads or fatigue that threatens his safety but rather a violent group that has petrol-bombed, shot at and thrown rocks at truck drivers to get them off the roads.
