Nkonzaphile Dube plucked out weeds from her son’s grave at their homestead, tucked quietly in the thicket of a sugarcane field in the small rural village of eMpembeni in KwaZulu-Natal.

With her hands already blackened from an early morning of toiling, the 72-year-old meticulously scratched away at leaves and unwanted shoots that had sprung up on the fresh mound, every so often clicking her tongue and shaking her head in discontent.

It had been three months since her son Vusi Gundane Dube, 38, a local businessman, had been shot 36 times, a mere 200 metres away from their home...
