Victims of eThekwini’s flood drown in empty promises

More than R1bn has been allocated for flood relief in the city’s new budget, but victims say they are tired of waiting

Umlazi pensioner Zazile Mungwe, 65, lost everything when her low-cost home collapsed during the devastating floods that battered KwaZulu-Natal in April. 

Footage of Mungwe’s Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) home in Umlazi’s H section was widely shared on social media when the muddy bank on which it was built collapsed and crashed into a shack below, burying 10-year-old boy Mnotho Mlotshwa.
