School builds pathway to paralysed pupil’s heart

After she was shot in an attack at home, all Kylea could talk about was going back to school. These people made it happen


Recovering in hospital from the ordeal of being left paralysed from the waist down after an unknown gunman attacked her family home, 12-year-old Kylea Fredericks was already excited about returning to school.

The news from the occupational therapist, however, was not good – she recommended Kylea be transferred to a special-needs school catering for wheelchair use.

Then, the Western Cape education department’s Inclusive Specialised Learner Education Support, the City of Cape Town, the Western Cape Rehabilitation Centre, and a local health facility came to the rescue...
