From the production of home-grown staples to a circuit-blitzing brute from Stuttgart, it was a busy week in the motoring world. Let us start right here — in the “friendly” province. The Eastern Cape is home to numerous automotive manufacturing facilities, one of them being the Mercedes-Benz plant in East London. The facility has been producing vehicles bearing the three-pointed star for over six decades, a legacy that continues, as production of the W206 C-Class commenced on 24 June.

Minister of trade, industry and competition Ebrahim Patel was in attendance at an event marking the start of production. He credited the Automotive Masterplan and the Automotive Production and Development Programme (APDP) as successful in deepening local technological expertise, creating local value chains and securing jobs.
