Campaign to ‘free Britney’ is gathering steam

Fans have voiced mounting concerns that the singer is being held hostage by her conservators

A new movement is emerging. One underpinned by the sense that an ongoing injustice must be stopped. It is getting support from a growing number of internet denizens and celebrities. It is #freebritney.

Over the past couple of weeks, fans of Britney Spears have voiced mounting concerns that the singer is being held hostage by her conservators. Last week those concerns went viral.

The Hit Me Baby One More Time singer has been under conservatorship since 2008 when she had her infamous meltdown that culminated in her shaving her head and being carted off to psychiatric hospital. Conservatorship is a legal state in the US where a guardian is appointed to manage the financial affairs and daily decisions of someone because of physical or mental incapacity. When she initially went under conservatorship her father took charge of her finances and career decisions, but he resigned in 2019, and Spears’s manager Jodi Montgomery took over. Between the two of them, they have allegedly drawn $1.1m a year from Spears’s earnings for their services. ..
