Being cooped up indoors for so long has led all of us down armchair wanderlust alley. Whether realistic or not we have all found ourselves daydreaming about where we will go once we’re allowed out. If you are of a warped bent then some of the places you’ve envisioned visiting may pop up on this list. If not then thank your chosen deity that you will never be going anywhere near any of these creepy destinations:

Poveglia Island, Italy

The usual images that pop up when one dreams of Italy tend to involve the Amalfi coast, pasta, the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore or something suitably Roman. What doesn’t generally pop into mind are creepy deserted asylums and abandoned weapons storage facilities. Yet that is how Italy’s Poveglia Island, near Venice, rolls. The place is renowned for housing a mental hospital where a doctor tortured and killed his patients in the 1920s, housing some of Napoleon’s weapons caches and twice being a dumping ground for plague victims. Technically it is illegal to visit the island, but that didn’t stop a group of American tourists from sneaking onto the island in 2016...
