Our struggles, our stories: this is Africa, told by Africans

Celebrate Africa Day with 10 of the best productions from the continent’s film and TV industries

Miche Peterson

The past two decades have seen an upsurge of stories told from the diverse perspectives of indigenous African tribes,  putting the continent and her creative industries on the global stage. The actors, directors, producers and scriptwriters have lived up to the fanfare, creatively and fearlessly showcasing the backgrounds of the continent’s people, languages and cultures.

Africa Day on Monday gives us an opportunity to appreciate their creative depth, humour and authenticity through a plethora of content.

Be it the comedic stylings of Tumi Morake, Loyiso Madinga, Loyiso Gola and Riaad Moosa;  the dramatic genius of director and showrunner Kagiso Lediga; the Oscar-winning vision of film director Gavin Hood; or the stars that bring it all to life — Pearl Thusi (Queen Sono), Presley Chweneyagae and Terry Pheto (Tsotsi), S’Dumo Mtshali and Warren Masemola (iNumber Number); there is a host of content from the region to satisfy your every streaming craving. ..
