J.Lo leads list of bum deals on the Oscars 2020 shortlist

When is a snub not a snub? When there’s an Oscars Best Actor category with five spots on it, and 10 actors you could argue deserved one. The fact that the Academy nominated Antonio Banderas (thank heavens), Adam Driver, Leonardo DiCaprio, Joaquin Phoenix and Jonathan Pryce means no pointed disservice to Robert De Niro, Adam Sandler, Taron Egerton, Eddie Murphy or Christian Bale. Some years, it’s just a tight squeeze.

In skimpier categories, the indignity of a shutout is rather more glaring. Meanwhile, there’s no doubt that this year’s Oscars are top-heavy with male-led, male-themed (and male-directed) movies. A total of 41 nominations went to Joker, The Irishman, 1917 and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, suggesting an attitude that dies hard in the industry: that violent pictures in which men kill other men, and the occasional stray woman if she’s asking for it, are the ones to throw your weight behind as serious contenders.
