Screen purists may want to look away now: the new future of film and television is set to be devoured in 10-minute chunks in portrait mode on your smartphone.

At least, that’s what a number of Hollywood executives, filmmakers and investors believe. Quibi is the highly hyped and newly revealed brainchild of Meg Whitman – previously chief executive of Hewlett Packard and eBay – and former Disney and Dreamworks boss Jeffrey Katzenberg.

The pitch is a simple one. Quibi – a cutesy portmanteau of “quick bites” – is a mobile exclusive video-streaming platform that will specialise in bespoke 10-minute episodes of TV, film and documentaries...
