It takes a lot to dazzle Miami, but these five local stars did it
Design Miami was wowed by Porky Hefer’s latest pods, together with four more of Africa’s foremost creatives
Southern Guild (https://southernguild.co.za/), which has moulded, marketed and monetised the African contemporary design landscape since its launch in 2008, wowed Design Miami (https://miami2019.designmiami.com/) last week with some of SA’s leading-edge creatives. The group’s contribution was “the boldest and most focused offering at any international fair to date”, it said, with most works commissioned specifically for the fair. The lineup included Andile Dyalvane, Dokter and Misses, Justine Mahoney, MAK, NØDE, Madoda Fani, Porky Hefer, Rich Mnisi and Zizipho Poswa, with 13 works never before seen by international audiences.
Southern Guild’s booth was an explosion of pop-centric collectible designs, including kinetic lighting, sculpture, furniture and large-scale ceramics that leaned towards bold shapes, bright colours and futuristic forms.
