Out to lunch with international award-winning winemaker José Condé of Stark-Condé Wines

I thought it was time to pay artisanal winery Stark-Condé in the Jonkershoek Valley, near Stellenbosch, a visit. Sitting on the deck overlooking Oude Nektar farm and its undulating vineyards, chatting with winemaker José Condé, I once again realised: every winery in the Cape has its own charming story, every winemaker an inimitable personality.

Condé is not your conventional winemaker. In fact, he is quick to point out that he has no formal training.

“I remember standing on the corner of 8th Street and Broadway in Manhattan 20 years ago, thinking that I was standing in the centre of the world. If you had told me that 20 years on I would be a winemaker in Stellenbosch, I would have thought you were nuts – besides, I had never even heard of Stellenbosch,” says Condé...
