‘Succession’ chic: It’s just one cool thing after another

Why Shiv Roy and her family are 2019's stealth-wealth style icons in classic and understated wardrobe staples

Succession, the epic and dark tale about a cutthroat family media empire, is not just getting attention for its tragicomic storylines – the stealth-wealth style of the protagonists has become one of the show’s biggest draws, too.

In episode five of the second series (streaming on Showmax), the Roy family land in a fleet of helicopters at the “funny little house” of fellow billionaires, the Pierces. Their mission is to convince this Kennedy-esque clan to sell their media organisation to the Roys, and the characters are dressed the part. That is, in a mulchy-neutral tableau of athleisure gilets, tailored charcoal coats and greige cashmere. Just visible is a classic Chanel flap bag on the arm of Marcia (wife of patriarch Logan) and a discreet Hermes Birkin swung by Shiv, Logan’s daughter.

It’s the perfect scene to demonstrate the style etiquette of the super-rich now. Instead of being portrayed with bling to rival the Trumps or Dynasty, Succession’s creators have opted to place the Roy family above blatant labels and brash displays, making them hum instead with a gentle understated, unaffected grandeur...
