Catch cancer early and enjoy the breast years of your life

Early detection of breast cancer, even before physical symptoms develop, is the best way to beat the disease

October is breast cancer awareness month. While breast cancer cannot be prevented, there are important steps to take to detect it early, even before physical symptoms appear, and before it has a chance to spread.

As frightening as a cancer diagnosis is, medical advances and early screening and diagnosis result in more people surviving and beating cancer with less aggressive and invasive treatment, says Prof Jackie Smilg, chairperson of the Radiological Society’s sub-specialty group, the Breast Imaging Society of SA.

Breast cancer is the leading cancer among women in SA and will affect one in 28 South Africans in their lifetimes. This figure is even higher in urban communities in SA, where the incidence is as high as one in eight according to National Health Laboratory statistics. ..
