It’s not every day that technology is branded the “antithesis of  democratic freedom”, but then the rollout of facial recognition surveillance has prompted an explosive debate.

“The notion of live facial recognition turning citizens into walking ID cards is chilling,” Silkie Carlo, director of the Big Brother Watch, explains.

Installing it on streets at scale – like CCTV cameras – would mark a “turning point for civil liberties”...
