Book extract: Being a child of activists was its own sort of struggle

'Holding the Fort' by Toni Strasburg

Jennifer Platt

Activists Rusty and Hilda Bernstein were arrested following the 1960 State of Emergency and held for three months without trial. Toni, their eldest child, at 16 years old was left to look after her younger siblings. She was also the only child allowed to visit them in jail.

Hilda kept a diary of her time in detention and now, years later, Toni pieces together her mother’s diary, bits of her father’s writing and her own recollection of this tumultuous time.
