Celebrity is a strange thing. Celebrities’ faces are so imprinted on our retinas that we imagine we know these people. What we know of course are their many projections of themselves, and our own projections onto them. We use celebrities as a sounding board for ways we could be. The illusion of familiarity is probably intensified by the fact that many celebrities choose to project all over the socials just like everyone else you actually know. The Kardashification of celebrity is a by-product of the age.
Speaking of the Kardashians, did you see Kylie Jenner, the world’s youngest self-made billionaire, hosted a party with a Handmaid’s Tale theme? It was crazy. Kylie recreated the Gilead circle of hell in her mansion in Kalabasas. All her mates donned the red robes and white Bo Peep hats and proceeded to have dinner around a blood-themed table with suitably named cocktails like “Under his eyes”, and they probably all ended up “Under the table”. It goes without saying that the internet went into a meltdown.
Fourth-wave feminists who were most recently to be found standing topless in front of Facebook so that they could free the nipple from its online shackles, where it is at present banned, were now frothing at the mouth. They simply could not fathom the heinous crime of Kylie choosing to celebrate this particular theme and imagery, and the first episode of the third series...
