London, Paris ... or Overstrand ... just some of the top spots in the Top 10 Travelers' Choice destinations

Sanet Oberholzer

Itching to travel but don’t know where? If you need recommendations, TripAdvisor has released the winners of its Travelers’ Choice awards for the most popular destinations among its users.
Number one is London, no doubt because the royal wedding attracted throngs of visitors in 2018. According to TripAdvisor, London’s royal-focused experiences also saw an increase in bookings during 2018 on its site. Second was Paris with Rome in third.
Zanzibar was second in the Africa category, but Morocco was top with Marrakech the most popular city. Cape Town is still a favourite in fourth spot, closely followed by the Overstrand region encapsulating gems such as Gansbaai, Hermanus, Kleinmond, Betty’s Bay, Pringle Bay and Pearly Beach.
The award winners were determined using an algorithm that picked up on the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings over a 12-month period for attractions, restaurants, and hotels as well as booking interest for each destination.
TripAdvisor’s Desiree Fish shared some travel wisdom after the results were released: “For those who want to cross these popular destinations off their travel bucket list, we recommend visiting during off-peak seasons when you can find great savings and less crowds.” Some basic research into the best time to plan your trip can mean cheaper airfare and accommodation and less crowds.
