If you’re a minimalist, people may have you pegged as being into only basics and for being risk averse when it comes to your fashion choices. But minimalist fashion does not have to be boring. Although the building blocks to dressing simply may require an affinity for a cool tones and carefully constructed tailoring, making a fashion statement is still on the cards. Here are five women who have made minimalism one of fashion’s go-to trends.
Victoria Beckham Her style metamorphosis should be considered the epitome of all transformations. She has gone from wearing one of her vast collection of Roberto Carvalli dresses to wearing oversized suits in primary colours and earthy tones. Her wardrobe has become an effective showcase for her own fashion label.
Style notes: To pull off a Victoria Beckham-inspired look consider oversized clothing as the new “it” items in your wardrobe. Start shopping for padded blazers and flared trousers to pair with minimal accessories.
Cate Blanchett
Known for her breathtaking red carpet looks, Blanchett’s style could even be compared to Jackie Kennedy’s classic looks, sans the big hair. Her ability to pull off structural silhouettes and bold detailing has positioned her as a nonconformist who does not follow trends.
Style notes: Think power suiting, tuxedo and fishtail dresses paired with a medium wavy hair cut and statement jewellery such as gemstone chandelier earrings.
Meghan Markle
The Duchess of Sussex’s style can be described as effortlessly chic. Her monotone looks in timeless silhouettes are sure to give anyone sartorial envy.
Style notes: Introduce soft pastels such as blush, sky blue, soft tangerine, coral and lemon sherbet to your wardrobe. Key wardrobe elements include blazers, midi dresses, shirt dresses and skirt suits.
It’s hard to think of Sade and not see the classic monochrome colours, a perfectly pencilled A-line skirt and a turtle neck.
Style notes: Keep accessories to a minimum, in this case less is more. Be sure to stack your trousers with structured skirts and complete the look with a muted-tone court shoe.
Zoe Saldana
Saldana can be considered the new face of modern minimalism. From her street style looks to her red carpet ensembles, Saldana is style personified. Making her the fashion hero we didn’t know we looked up to.
Style notes: Channel Zoe Saldana’s looks by stripping down on bright coloured clothing and shop for key pieces in black, grey and white. Regard wide leg trousers, detailed jumpsuits, slip dresses, and court shoes as your wardrobe staples.
