Sly sales pitch: Why are celebs going mad for celery juice?

Celery juice is all the rage on social media with some people dubbing it a health miracle and others questioning the science behind claims of it being a cure-all drink.
According to health information website Healthline, a glass of celery juice has only 40 calories, has anti-inflammatory properties and is loaded with benefits that include lowering blood pressure, preventing chronic diseases and reducing oxidative stress.
The man behind the celery juice movement is believed to be Anthony William, self-proclaimed medical medium, who encourages people to drink about 500 millilitres of pure celery juice on an empty stomach every day.
William has 184,000 followers on Instagram and his account, @celeryjuicebenefits, lists numerous benefits such as “celery juice can help heal addictions”, “celery juice brings down toxic liver heat” and “celery juice teaches us to value simplicity”. William’s website is littered with praise from celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Pharrell Williams and Robert De Niro. Calvin Harris is quoted as saying: “Anthony is a great man. His knowledge is fascinating and has been very helpful for me. The celery juice alone is a game changer!”
However, according to registered dietician Ashleigh Caradas, there is no benefit to drinking celery juice, unless you do so in conjunction with a healthy diet.
“There is no cure-all food. While celery and celery juice do have health benefits, it would be unwise for someone to assume that they could cure themselves of an inflammatory condition or hypertension just with celery juice alone.” Her advice: to heal any condition or ailment, we must always look at the issue holistically.
That said, celery does offer some health benefits. It is high in vitamin C and, as such, assists in boosting the immune system and has been shown to ward off symptoms of flu, the common cold and pneumonia.
Celery also contains phthalide, a substance that can relax arterial muscles and may lower blood pressure. Furthermore, celery also contains a good dose of calcium and magnesium, which also play a role in lowering high blood pressure while contributing to good bone health.
As for celery assisting with bloating, the green plant has long been hailed as an effective diuretic. The high concentration of minerals in celery can help stimulate urine production and get rid of unwanted water and bloating.
