All alone in this great big world? There’s an app for that

Aneesa Adams

Travelling is a wonderful way to spend spare cash and precious free time, and lately more and more people are taking journeys alone. While this may sound daunting to some, technology lets you make friends and find companionship at the touch of the download button. Apps help solo travellers in a myriad of ways. Here are five of the best to use while trotting the globe on your own.
XE currency converter
Trying to calculate the exchange rate while on holiday can be tedious. XE is a free app that tracks live currency markets across the globe, accurately updated on up-to-the minute conversion tables.
Prey anti-theft
This app manages all your devices from laptops to phones even after they’ve been stolen. Remotely wipe data and retrieve photos with just one touch. Take extra precaution and lock your devices from the other side of the world.
Google Translate
At your fingertips you can translate words and communicate with locals in more than 100 languages. You find yourself in an unknown street while walking through Rome or at a loss as to what to order from a menu? No problem. Just point your camera at a street sign or the menu and it will translate the text into one of 38 languages. It also works without an internet connection, allowing you to translate 59 languages with just the installed app.
This connects women with fellow female travellers before or during a trip. Each user is screened before being granted access to Tourlina and the app only allows communication once you’ve been verified. The way it works is through similar interests. Enter your location and voila! Mutual connections come up and then your planning begins.
The EatWith app is great for lovers of food. Giving you a list of selected local stores in various destinations, it also allows you to hang out with someone new for an amazing culinary experience. The combination of food and travel is what makes the app unique. Experience a city thoroughly through dinner parties at the homes of the people in the towns you visit. This app is said to be the AirBnB of food.
In a hurry to find a flight? Get on Hopper! The app finds the best deals and best times to fly by analysing over a million flights available for that day.
