Now and zen you really need to get away from it all
Loosen up at the two-day Yoga Flow Full Moon Safari
Payday weekend can sometimes be filled with debauchery and unnecessary spending. But with December right around the corner, perhaps it’s a good idea to relax a little bit before the real party season kicks in.
If you’re in Gauteng this weekend and you love yoga, nature and company, head to Cradle Moon Lakeside in Muldersdrift for the two-day Yoga Flow Full Moon Safari. The brainchild of organiser Mischa Els, the festival (which follows March’s Yoga Flow Festival) takes place during a full moon and will include a hike under the moon on Saturday night. The location of the event – a farm near the Cradle of Humankind – is perfect for the festival’s objectives, too.
Says Els: “[It] is close to where some of the first stories originate of humankind, so we are taking people back to their roots, under the reflective full moon, to connect to the heartbeat of Mama Africa. The ground that takes care of us and that nurtures us, so we would like to celebrate our Mama Africa – our home – who looks after us … while bringing in fun safari vibes where people can connect to animals, earth and activities.”
The idea for Yoga Flow came about when Els was on a business trip to the UK and a yoga festival happened take place during her time there. “I decided to volunteer at the festival. I was so blown away and grateful for the space, the people, and teachers, that after the experience I began to think about home and how we have so many incredible people here with beautiful stories and teachings to share,” she says.
After returning to SA, Els was inspired to create a space that “would allow for everyone to express themselves”.
So how does the Yoga Flow Full Moon Safari work? You can get a one-day ticket or a weekend pass, and spend the days partaking in various yoga sessions and activities with interesting names such as Partner Acrobatic Yoga, African Sunset Yoga, Deep Vibrational Soul Shaking Yoga, and African Ancestral Womb Travelling. There will be a vegan food stall, a vegan buffet and a restaurant that caters to vegetarians and meat-eaters.
And you don’t have to be a seasoned yoga practitioner to join in: all skill levels are welcome (from non-existent to advanced).
If you’ve never tried yoga before but are interested in attending the festival, Els says: “Be open and don’t have any expectations. Don’t feel bad if you can’t do something … it’s about feeling better and becoming a healthier version of yourself physically and mentally.”
What does she want you to know about this weekend’s festival? “Here you can kick off your shoes, relax, sit under a tree, take a swim, move your body, breathe and just be free. You know it’s this time of the year where everyone is tired; become still and reflect on your year before it is over, while looking at the baby giraffes walk by.”
