Take your Mootee (you won’t need a spoonful of sugar)
Melville joint judged to be among the 10 best new cocktail bars in the world
Mootee Bar opened in Melville, Johannesburg, less than a year ago and already the hot spot, known for its unusual cocktails that use local ingredients, has been recognised as one of this year’s top 10 best new cocktail bars in the world.
The 12th annual Spirited Awards in New Orleans is regarded as the equivalent of the Oscars for the bar industry. Working through over 1,000 nominees, 150 judges gave each nominee the third degree to ensure all the criteria had been met across the 25 award categories.
Mootee Bar was named in the Top 10 in the category Best New International Cocktail Bar – the only bar from Africa to make it onto the list. The region with the most winners was London, and included Coupette, The Mint Gun Club, Scout and Waeska Bar.
Mootee is owned and managed by three mixologists who have earned their stripes on the global stage. Each of the 12 featured cocktails has a visual representation designed by artist Jared Hurwitz.
“We want our cocktails to provoke as many senses as possible. Could a cocktail not just bring pleasure to your palate, but also inspire creativity or a memory? Perhaps a sense of nostalgia? We would like to think that it can – and that’s the magic of Mootee Bar,” says bartender Denzel Heath.
