Don’t hate on the 80s: Lady Di and ‘Dynasty’ are so in

Don’t hate on the 80s: Lady Di and ‘Dynasty’ are so in

And all the guys are going to get feather-cut mullets and wear their pastel jacket sleeves pushed up

Keneilwe Eleanor Pule

Anyone remember Heathers, the 1988 film starring Winona Ryder, Christian Slater and Shannon Doherty? Well, the film was recreated and aired as a series this year before it was dropped by Paramount network due to continued concern about its content. Though it was eventually dropped, the hype around its re-release has focused attention on 1980s style. This, and other 1980s-themed shows like the enormously popular Stranger Things has meant the return of that decade’s fashion is upon us.
This is why it came as no surprise to see famous fashion blogger Miroslava Duma pegging her denim trousers (folding the cuff of the jeans snugly against the leg) while pairing them with an oversized pinstripe blazer and white heels. This whole outfit screams the 1980s, and who better to take fashion cues from than Duma herself?A heavy resurrection of 1980s trends has been seen both on the runway and the streets. If you are as eager as I am to incorporate them into your wardrobe but are a little wary about looking like you’re rocking a dress-up costume, look no further than these tips to make the 1980s work for you:
Oversized blazers
Balenciaga first re-introduced the oversized blazer complete with dramatic shoulder pads. The legendary founder of the house, Cristóbal Balenciaga, was known for playing with proportions having created the balloon jacket in 1953.The current creative director, Demna Gvasalia, showed oversized blazers in plain black and check prints at the brand’s ready to wear show a few years ago. This classic is making a comeback and can be found in many a fashion guru’s wardrobe. Because of its design it can be worn with anything. Pair it with denim trousers, and a printed shirt for a chic look, or wear it over a little black dress for a look that crosses the masculine/feminine divide.
Shoulder pads
It is most common to associate large shoulder pads with blazers but this design element can be used across lots of different tops and blouses.Shoulder pads strengthened the silhouette of the model walking the runway during the Redemption Haute Couture Fall Winter 2018/2019 show as part of Paris Fashion Week. Wear this look with leather trousers or a pencil skirt for the ultimate femme fatale effect.
White heels
Brazilian style blogger and businesswoman Helena Bordon was seen wearing white heels outside Elie Saab during Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture Fall Winter 2018/2019.This means every women who has been feeling unsure about purchasing these shoes for fear of making a risky style choice now has a licence to shop for them. Style up a simple and elegant monochrome look by pairing white heels with a slouchy black and white pinstripe suit.
Waist belts
These are undoubtedly the answer to a pertinent question: How can I best ensure that a loose-fitting maxi-dress flatters my body shape? Invest in a black waist belt to wear over your monotone or floral dresses during spring.Neon
We could not truly have a 1980s revival without the neon retro colour trend that some love to hate. If colour is not your thing you can introduce neon accents into your wardrobe by shopping for neon coloured accessories like moon-bags, belts or earrings. You can also shop for the trendy neon leather satchel shown at the Louis Vuitton SS19 collection – if you have the budget, that is.
