Hang with great art this weekend
The 2018 American Express Winter Sculpture Fair is on this weekend
If you’re looking for something to do this weekend that covers getting out of town, communing with nature, drinking great wine and eating delicious food from some of the best purveyors of wine and food in Franschoek and, on top of it all, upping your intake of culture, the 2018 American Express Winter Sculpture Fair will cover all your bases. Oh, and it’s also a great treat for art-savvy mothers on Mother’s Day.Artlogic have partnered with Franschhoek Tourism to bring the finest chefs and winemakers from the Cape Valley to the NIROX Foundation Sculpture Park, in the Cradle of Humankind. Visitors will be able buy their choice of picnic from over 40 exhibitors to tailor-make their own lunch among the sculptures. The lineup of artists who will participate in the exhibition, called Not A Single Story, include the legendary Esther Mahlangu, whose large works reference Ndbele patterns, and the Japanese multimedia artist Yoko Ono, who will be showing her work in Africa for the first time. The exhibition also features local artists like Mary Sibande, Zanele Muholi and Claudette Schreuders, a listing that accentuates the fact that South Africa has world-class sculptors. The Winter Sculpture Fair is being held in collaboration with the Swedish sculpture park, Wanås Konst/The Wanås Foundation. The exhibition is supported by the Swedish Postcode Foundation with additional support from the Swedish Embassy and the Swedish Institute. The title Not A Single Story is inspired by The Danger of a Single Story, a TED talk presented by Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, positing that diversity strengthens rather than divides us. It’s a bicontinental exchange between two of the world’s leading sculpture parks and the selected artists come from various backgrounds, representing a rich diversity of perspectives and influences. The artist list is dominated by women artists in response to a very singular art history. The exhibition will combine existing works alongside newly developed productions. When Is It?
