The Zulu royal family has come a long way with the Ankole cattle breed

One of the beasts belonging to Ramaphosa sold for a record price last week, but their elite status goes back centuries

Last week an Ankole bull at Phala Phala farm is said to have been sold for R1.65m — a record price for a bull sold in SA.

The Ankole cattle sold are said to have been bought in Sudan. Little is known about this cattle type that has been in Africa for more than 6,000 years.

They have been in Southern Africa since the iron age. They migrated into SA and were a special breed of the Zulu and the Pedi monarchies, as it is said in Umongo kaZulu, a history book by Prince Zeblon Zulu. ..
