EDITORIAL | Not good enough, Zondo. Tell SA about graft claims in your office

The office of the chief justice cannot allow itself to be manipulated or corrupted for personal gain


The Sunday Times reported at the weekend that three top officials in the office of the chief justice (OCJ) manoeuvred themselves into benefiting from at least 30% of a R225m IT tender for the justice department.

A day after the trio — CFO Casper Coetzer, chief director: court administration and spokesperson Nathi Mncube and director case management Yvonne van Niekerk — departed their offices on May 31, they started in brand-new roles as local partners to a Thomson Reuters contract. 

The trio unashamedly schemed their way into this deal. While their company, ZA Square Consulting, was registered on December 15, their identities as Reuters’s 30% local partner were only revealed to the justice department in mid-May. By then, they were already serving their notice periods. The three insist that technically they had done nothing wrong: the contract — which is set to earn them at least R67.3m — only kicked in on June 1, a day after they left their jobs in the OCJ...
