EDITORIAL | Setting out on a journey in SA? You must be off your trolley
The viral video of a trolley surfer speaks instantly and eloquently about where the country finds itself
For an expression of unbridled joie de vivre, it would be hard to beat the look on the face of the man in a shopping trolley hurtling along a soaked Pretoria freeway while holding on to the back of a truck.
This moment of madness had universal appeal for a variety of reasons. The Times in the UK reported it as follows: “In the wonky-wheeled history of supermarket trolleys, none has run as true as the one filled with a stowaway clinging to a fuel tanker thundering along SA’s busiest road in driving rain.”
Former Mail & Guardian editor Nic Dawes, now working in New York City, retweeted video of the man’s antics with the comment: “Siri, show me something incredibly on-the-nose about fossil fuels and inequality that is circulating in WhatsApp in SA.”..
