EDITORIAL | When the state takes the wheel it’s a huge train smash

SAA. The Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project. Railways. The list of failures is long and depressing


The 1987 movie Planes, Trains and Automobiles depicts a calamitous journey with a happy ending. If only we could expect the same outcome in our home-grown odyssey of transport chaos.

We already know plenty about the state’s capacity to run an airline, and especially about its irremediable habit of throwing good taxpayers’ money after bad in pie-in-the-sky fantasies. 

As for automobiles, the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project is a good example of what happens when the state takes the wheel. Thirteen years after it was conceived and seven years since e-tolling became an instant failure, operating losses over the past three years have been R240,000 a day...
