And we are all contributing to it
“Something is rotten in the state of Denmark,” says the guard, Marcellus, to his friend Horatio in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, lamenting how King Claudius had corrupted the country.
At the weekend, President Cyril Ramaphosa, the successor to our own King Claudius, expressed the same angst as Marcellus in a seven-page letter to ANC members, lamenting the graft in our own country.
Reading his letter, though, one would arrive at the conclusion that Shakespeare’s fictional Denmark, with its political killings, thieving and adultery, has nothing on us. There are so many things rotten in the state of SA, and it’s not just the ANC government...
