EDITORIAL | SA’s safety is yours to bear, so don’t mess up

Instead of lessening the burden to keep ourselves and others safe, level 2 requires us to shoulder it more than ever

Much of SA celebrated on Tuesday as level 2 lockdown laws kicked in.

Snaking queues were common at bottle stores and retailers as citizens stocked up on the now-legal booze and smokes they had been denied. In one case, three friends dropped R20,000 on whisky and rum, and other people Times Select spoke to said they were delighted the bans had been lifted. They could not only buy legally, but also purchase legit products and brands. Oft-dodgy home-brewed pineapple beer was a thing of the past. 

At the same time, tavern bosses, restaurateurs, store owners and businesses rejoiced at seeing some light at the end of months-long, dark, cash-strapped tunnels when their lifeblood products were outlawed. They were open for business. Finally...
