I understand that this is going to sound controversial. I know it will make some people angry. But I would like to suggest that we give the Cape Independence cult what it wants.

Pierre de Vos, the constitutional law expert, would no doubt disagree. Just this week he wrote a typically clear and concise essay explaining why the Cape Independence crowd – whose slogan is the appropriately histrionic “Free the Cape!” – is essentially lying to its supporters by suggesting that picking up your ball and stomping off to form your own country can be done via a referendum.

Others, meanwhile, have noted that the handful of groups dedicated to secession all seem to be very clear that they are not racist, which they want to demonstrate by putting a literal border fence between them and the rest of Africa...
