Through all the bannings, unbannings and lockdown easings, government’s strategy has not been applied
Announcing SA’s move from level 4 to level 3 lockdown on May 24, President Cyril Ramaphosa said government would adopt a “differentiated approach” to deal with areas where infections were high.
He cautioned that any part of the country could be returned to level 4 or 5 and, conversely, that areas where infections were low could move to levels 2 or 1.
In the 10 weeks since, government has not implemented any differentiated lockdowns, keeping hotspots such as Gauteng on the same level as provinces such as the Northern Cape, where infections are relatively low...
