We need the media more than ever – but we must step up for them

Journos continue to bring us quality news in the face of enormous disaster, but the industry is being decimated

A vibrant and free media is the cornerstone of a healthy democracy, but the Covid-19 pandemic and consequent weak economic activity is posing one of the biggest risks the industry has yet faced.

A weaker media industry affects everyone, from the primary school teacher who needs to tell her class about how to keep safe, to the corporate titan or policy maker wanting to have their finger on the pulse of events to stay ahead – and stay safe.

However, recent statistics show that the livelihoods of many journalists are being threatened or lost altogether as advertising revenue takes a hammering in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis. ..
