EDITORIAL | The storm is here, and it won’t pass us by

Grieving, for the ill and the dead, is arguably more heartbreaking than ever. We must take Covid-19 more seriously


At 0.03am on Sunday, the healthy ministry dropped its daily Covid-19 statistics. They made for sombre reading.

The ministry confirmed there were 10,873 new cases, meaning the country breached the 10,000-case mark in a single day for the first time. Gauteng – which will, barring huge cluster outbreaks, overtake the Western Cape to become the virus epicentre in SA in a matter of days – accounted for more than 5,000 of these new cases.

Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize also confirmed that another grim milestone had been reached: more than 3,000 people had died with Covid-19...
