ANC won’t get its sticky mitts on the restaurant game. It’s too much work

They’ve never seen a cookie jar they couldn’t resist, but patronage and power beat the stresses of real life every time

Last week, DA politician Ghaleb Cachalia went to Grand Central Station of conspiracy theory – Facebook – with a grandly paranoid theory of his own: the government’s Covid restaurant “agenda”, he wrote, was plain to see: “Kill the players in the industry. Allow and fund the chosen to pick up the assets and the space. Venal race-driven Machiavellian bullshit.”

It was hyperbolic, but I understand why Cachalia might have flung himself down that particular rabbit hole.

For starters, the state’s ruling that restaurants can open to diners but can’t serve alcohol is essentially an instruction to restaurateurs to come out of money-saving hibernation and go bankrupt as fast as they can. ..
