What will Americans do, come election time, to drag themselves out of the mire into which Trump has cast them?

On Saturday, the US celebrates the Fourth of July, Independence Day, during a time of great uncertainty and turmoil.

First to strike the country was the coronavirus pandemic. Americans witnessed scenes straight out of the Middle Ages in the country’s most modern city, as rotting corpses piled up in lorries. Bring out your dead, New York.

The effect on the economy was devastating, comparable to no era other than the Great Depression. An estimated  6.6 million Americans filed for unemployment in a single week in April. A top economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch calculated this week that US unemployment will hit 19%.  ..
