Instead of going into defence mode, our leaders should take a leaf out of Siphiwe Tshabalala’s book
“This is a stunning, stunning effort ... that is a thunderbolt! Wow. Wow.”
Those were the words of the SkySport commentator after Bafana Bafana’s Siphiwe Tshabalala scored a goal in the opening Soccer World Cup match against Mexico 10 years ago. It was one of those “where were you when it happened” moments for South Africans. It was our country at its best. The entire tournament on local soil could be described in the sports commentator’s words – a “stunning, stunning effort”.
The official 2010 Soccer World Cup song by Shakira declared it as the “time for Africa”. Tshabalala, looking back at the June 11 showcase at Soccer City in Soweto, said it was “an iconic moment, not only for me but for South Africans, for the continent and for the world”...
