If you had to compare the number of people who are delighted about the lifting of prohibition with the number of people who are appalled that lockdown level 3 allows alcohol to be sold again, the liquor lovers probably overwhelm the teetotalling party-poopers by a thousand to one.

Compare the number of people no longer taking the coronavirus seriously with those who realise the worst is yet to come, and you’d probably get a comparable ratio.

This is not to suggest that it is wrong for people to partake of wine and beer, but protests against the so-called assaults on human rights (of which the restrictions on booze and tobacco are the most railed-against) have their roots in rebellion...
