Covid-19 deaths and cases are set to spike, which means we shouldn’t abuse the freedoms we’ve been given

A number of significant milestones were hit this weekend. The Western Cape surpassed 30,000 Covid-19 cases on Saturday, the same day the country’s confirmed cases rose past 45,000 on the back of its biggest daily increases yet.

The death toll from Covid-19 BREACHED/GOT CLOSE to the 1,000 mark on Sunday night – a figure that, although not unexpected, is still jarring. At the same time, the Eastern Cape’s death toll passed 100, making it second worst behind the Western Cape’s more than 700 fatalities.

Because these milestones come in the context of a significant backlog in the number of tests, and with the NICD admitting that testing numbers are down because of a shortage of test kits, the true number of infections – and probably deaths – is higher than the figures reveal...
