For those who were out and about on Monday, it was a staggering sight.
South Africans in suburbs and townships stood in lengthy queues to buy alcohol when the ban on its sale was lifted as the country moved to lockdown level 3. Many lined up from before 9am and the queues were still there late in the day, ahead of 5pm when bottle stores were meant to close.
How, some wondered, could so many afford to buy so much liquor, when stories of thousands going hungry, being retrenched or having their salaries slashed had dominated the news in recent weeks?..
