EDITORIAL | Clothes maketh the mania. We’re now a nanny state
All the good work done by the government to fight the pandemic will be undone by a raft of over-regulation
Rejoice! Your government now allows you to buy “crop bottoms” (whatever that is), to wear with boots and leggings. Yes, according to the revised directions on the sale of clothing, footwear and bedding during level 4 of the lockdown – released by trade and industry minister Ebrahim Patel on Tuesday evening – the government has decided to style you this winter.
Instead of opening up the entire range of clothing and leaving the minute detail to market forces, Patel has decreed that adult South Africans can now buy underwear, boots, slippers, closed-toe heels, closed-toe flat shoes, smart closed-toe shoes and casual closed-toe shoes.
If your preference is open-toe shoes, well, tough luck; Patel and his micro-regulating bureaucrats don’t think those are suitable for you yet. ..
