[Clark and his wife, Jane, were attending the 60th birthday party of Diana, Princess of Wales’s father, the 8th Earl Spencer.] All very gay and glittering. Even at dinner Jane ranked no more than equal third on the carat count, although she was wearing both the leaf diamonds and Aunt Di’s necklace. Some of the more mature ladies at the ball itself could hardly move, so encrustulated were they.
