EDITORIAL | Teamwork vital to keep pupils safe when schools reopen

Parents, schools and government need to be vigilant to ensure lives are not risked and good work is not undone

Government has found itself between a rock and a hard place when it comes to easing lockdown restrictions. And the situation applies as much to education as it does to business.

After much debate and several returns to the drawing board, schools are provisionally set to reopen on May 18 – two months after they closed on March 18. Basic education minister Angie Motshekga is due to confirm the dates Thursday. 

Grades 7 and 12 will be the first through the school gates, given the importance of these education levels, with other grades returning on a staggered basis in a bid to ensure safety precautions such as social distancing...
