Strange compulsions can develop when you aren’t allowed to leave home for weeks on end. I spent hours yesterday trying to track down an old TV advert starring Little Emma Pengelly, “a real gourmet special”, whose chocolate-smeared dress was made bright and clean again thanks to a particular washing powder.
I was about the same age as Little Emma Pengelly at the time, so naturally I was more interested in the gooey cake mixture plastered all over her white dress than I was in brand loyalty.
The detergent that saved the day (and the dress) might have been Omo, or Punch, or Surf with Superblue. If anyone has the answer I’d love to hear it...
