It is a measure of the man SA now has at the helm that he can take a crisis that was unimaginable seven weeks ago today, when SA chalked up its first coronavirus case, and turn it into a cause for hope.

That is what President Cyril Ramaphosa did in his televised message to the nation on Tuesday night, promising that when this disaster is behind us – however many months or years that might take – we will emerge stronger, even prosper.

Those words in Jacob Zuma’s mouth would have provoked howls of derision. From Ramaphosa, projecting confident authority as he announced an economic and social rescue package that will cost about R500bn, they seemed believable, even reassuring...
