Globalisation has had its day as borders close, inflation fears loom

Fans of globalisation aren’t having a good crisis. Each day brings a new international row as countries make an undignified scramble for supplies to fight Covid-19.

Thus we see Germany accusing the US of “modern piracy” after intercepting face masks bound for Berlin. The Germans temporarily banned exports of their own. Needless to say, the Elysee Palace’s mini-Napoleon, Emmanuel Macron, requisitioned France’s own stocks of surgical masks and equipment weeks ago, while mortuaries filled to bursting in Spain and Italy.
