There’s no excuse for the way I see many of us behaving, and soon our selfishness will come back to bite us


On Tuesday night, on live television, the cast of German Big Brother was told about the Covid-19 outbreak. I must confess that I found this quite shocking: I had no idea that anyone was still making Big Brother.

The decision to break the bubble of idiocy around the Big Brother house was reportedly the result of public pressure. Germans, it seems, had become increasingly angry that the 14 young people, sealed up inside the Cologne studio over a month ago, still didn’t know about the outbreak that has locked down most of Europe.

No doubt the news came as a shock to many of the contestants and I wouldn’t be surprised if it leads to some walk-outs. But at least they weren’t responsible for their ignorance or the blithe, carefree way that they have lived the last few weeks...
