[To Stanley Baxter] In the evening we went to one of the suburban Empires to see a riotous drag show, Call Me Mister. The house was packed with obviously sympathetic (and I suspect empathetic) spivs who roared their approval in no uncertain fashion. There was the usual sketch about two drags arriving at the Holiday Camp, and the hearty young man in a sports vest assuring them that he would be available for anything, during their stay, with the continual repetition of the line “if there is anything you want, just let me know” and you can guess the innuendo and variation made on that. The two pieces playing in this were contrasting. One very thin, the other enormously fat. The first one had to say to the other “I never forget a face. But in your case I am willing to make an exception” whereupon Hugh laughed so singly and loudly that she turned to where he was sitting in the stalls and said “thanks dear” – and Hugh was tickled pink...
